Bhartiya Janata Party Distances Itself from Controversial Remark on Indian Constitution

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has moved swiftly to distance itself from a controversial remark made by its Member of Parliament from Karnataka, Anantkumar Hegde, regarding the Indian Constitution. Describing Hegde's statement as his personal opinion, the ruling party has sought clarification from him, asserting that it does not reflect the official stance of the BJP.

Addressing the issue, BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia emphasized that Hegde's remarks were personal in nature and did not represent the views of the BJP as a whole. Bhatia reiterated the party's commitment to upholding the Constitution and stated that every decision made by the BJP is in the best interest of the country and in line with the spirit of the Constitution.

Hegde's controversial statement, made during a public gathering in Uttara Kannada district, sparked a political row in the state. In his remarks, Hegde suggested that amending the Constitution to address what he perceived as distortions introduced by the Congress would require a two-thirds majority in both houses of parliament, as well as substantial political dominance across various states.

The six-time Lok Sabha member from Karnataka outlined a scenario where the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would secure a significant victory in the upcoming general elections, enabling the BJP to gain a decisive majority in the Rajya Sabha and achieve the necessary support across states to pursue constitutional amendments.

The BJP's swift response to Hegde's remarks underscores its commitment to maintaining a clear and unified stance on matters concerning the Indian Constitution. As political tensions simmer in Karnataka over Hegde's comments, the BJP's clarification seeks to reaffirm its dedication to constitutional principles and the democratic process.
